About this course
Water resource management questions — how much is in a reservoir, where does a river flood seasonally, is a region heading into drought — can mostly be answered from free satellite archives if you know which index and which sensor to reach for. This course builds a Lake Volta storage time series spanning three decades and a drought early-warning approach for the Sahel, using nothing beyond tools already covered earlier in the curriculum.
What you'll learn
- Monitor Lake Volta's surface area across 30 years of Landsat data
- Convert surface area to an estimated storage volume using a hypsometric relationship
- Map seasonal inundation pulse along a river's flood plain
- Generate NDVI-based drought early-warning signals
- Export a water-resource dashboard suitable for a ministry's reporting needs
Requirements
- Optical Analysis with Sentinel-2
- SAR Processing for Flood Mapping
