About this course

Water resource management questions — how much is in a reservoir, where does a river flood seasonally, is a region heading into drought — can mostly be answered from free satellite archives if you know which index and which sensor to reach for. This course builds a Lake Volta storage time series spanning three decades and a drought early-warning approach for the Sahel, using nothing beyond tools already covered earlier in the curriculum.

What you'll learn

  • Monitor Lake Volta's surface area across 30 years of Landsat data
  • Convert surface area to an estimated storage volume using a hypsometric relationship
  • Map seasonal inundation pulse along a river's flood plain
  • Generate NDVI-based drought early-warning signals
  • Export a water-resource dashboard suitable for a ministry's reporting needs

Requirements

  • Optical Analysis with Sentinel-2
  • SAR Processing for Flood Mapping
